John is the president and third generation owner of Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes & Crematory.

A 1970 graduate of Dover High School, John went on to Ashland College where he earned his degree in 1974. In 1975 he was an honors graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He earned the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) from the Academy of Funeral Service Practice in 1976, become one of the first individuals in Ohio to be so named.

In addition to sitting in with thousands of individuals and families over the years, he has also become a familiar figure in the community through his decades of involvement in church and civic activities. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors for: Citizens Bank, Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce, Ashland University Alumni Association, and the Board of Trustees for Union Hospital. He is also Past-president of the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Tuscarawas, Strasburg Lions Club, and the Tri-county Funeral Directors Association.

He is a member of St. John's United Church where he had formerly served on church council and as Treasurer.

John is married to the former Joyce Dallau and resides in Dover. The couple has three adult children, Trevor, Troy and Tricia, and four grandchildren, Kylan & Alyssa Herzig, Ava and Jack McKinnon.
