John and Joyce Herzig of Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes of Dover and Strasburg have returned from the National Funeral Directors Association Annual Convention held this year in Orlando, Florida.

The Herzig's were on hand to take part in ''Pursuit of Excellence'' day at the convention and take part in a special award ceremony.

''The Pursuit of Excellence program is the premier standard for funeral service excellence, and the Eagle award is the highest level of achievement.  Recipients of the prestigious award receive an impressive Eagle trophy made of beautiful Italian Marble, for display in their funeral home,'' said NFDA acting Chief Executive Officer Christine Reichelt-Pepper.

To achieve recognition in the Pursuit of Excellence program, a funeral home must meet quality service criteria in eight categories of achievement.  The categories include: education, compassionate service, technical skills, community and professional skills, library and media resources, professional development, in-house staff training, and public and community relations.  To earn the Eagle recognition, a funeral home must meet additional criteria in each category and create a scrapbook to detail those activities.

Of the over 22,000 funeral homes nationwide - and nearly 13,500 NFDA members, Toland-Herzig was one of only 99 recipients of the 2001 Pursuit of Excellence Eagle award.
