Pursuit of Excellence

Overwhelming Generosity
February, 2003

On Friday, February 14, nearly one hundred people contributed to the 3rd annual “A Gift From The Heart” event at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.  Donations of blood, time and cookies were given in memory of loved ones, door prizes were contributed and time, sewing skills and sewing supplies were donated to Project Linus.  Project Linus is a national organization that gives handmade security blankets to children in hospitals and other distressed situations.  The coordinator for our area is Cheri Boone.  Cheri does a wonderful job and her efforts helped to make the day a true community event.

All blood donations were to benefit the Union hospital blood bank, and enough blood was given to assist 126 people.  This is significant, as we are currently experiencing a nationwide shortage in our blood supply.  In addition, information and literature were distributed to those in attendance from the Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross and Hospice of Tuscarawas County.  Participants included staff and residents from the Country Club Retirement Center and Hennis Care and Assisted Living Centre.  The House of Stones, McDonald-Niklaus Framing and Treasured Gifts, Eiler’s Candy, Hampton Inn of Newcomerstown, Dutch Valley Restaurant, WJER, Yaggi’s Cheese, Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes, The Silkworm, AAA, Baker Florist, Floral Packaging, Elegance Floral, the Red Cross, Group 31 Inc. and Dayspring Christian Book Store donated door prizes, among others.  The Balloonatik decorated with balloons and Domino’s Pizza made sure that our blood donors were nourished.

Also because of the generosity of our community, Project Linus was able to complete over fifty blankets throughout the day and gained four new, potential distribution sites as well as some much needed name recognition.  The most beneficial part of the day, however, was that a great many bereaved individuals were able to help others, while they remembered a special loved one, and help themselves in their grief.

Blood, time, cookies, door prizes, sewing skills and supplies were all given in memory of the following:
