Kettles & Caring Open House
December, 2004

“It would have meant a lot to Grandpa,” said John Herzig, President of Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes – a firm founded in 1929 by his grandfather, John W. Toland, “because the Salvation Army meant so much to him.”

Herzig was speaking in reference to a new twist on Toland-Herzig’s second annual Holiday Open House at the Monarch Center.  In honor of his grandfather and in celebration of the firm’s 75th anniversary, Toland-Herzig will be teaming up with our local Salvation Army for ''Kettles & Caring – Hope for the Holidays''.

The Open House will be held Monday, December 20 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, 831 Boulevard, Dover. Toland-Herzig staff members will be on hand to assist the Salvation Army by ringing the bell and collecting cash donations as well as organizing food donations to help stock the Salvation Army food pantry.

Toland-Herzig will have a variety of holiday related materials available, including Todd Little’s “Little Words to Help You Through the Holidays” CD.  Refreshments will also be provided.

Little, the firm’s Director of Bereavement Services sites the program as helpful in more ways than one.  “It seems to me that for a grieving person, a program like this affords the opportunity not only to help themselves by stopping in and talking with me about their loss and taking advantage of our materials and resources, but the opportunity to help others as well by making a cash donation or bringing food for the Salvation Army food pantry.”

Toland-Herzig will also make it possible to donate to the Salvation Army online with a direct link on the company website at www.tolandherzig.com.

Herzig knows that Toland-Herzig's affiliation with the Salvation Army is really a family affair.  ''Come to think of it,'' noted Toland-Herzig's third generation owner, ''this event would have made my mother (Marilyn Toland Herzig) proud too.  For years she organized the Army's Silver Tea and was always busy doing something with the Auxiliary.''
