Pursuit of Excellence

Area funeral home helping rescue pets
September, 2005

As seen in The Times Reporter In addition to the terrible human toll following Hurricane Katrina, there have also been many, many animals separated from their owners.  To help with their rescue and care, and in coordination with Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, the staff of the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes & Crematory and their My Friend Pet Crematory is collecting funds and materials that will be sent to the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Louisiana Animal Control Association.

A drop-off for funds and materials will be held Monday, September 12 from 9-5pm at each of Toland-Herzig’s four locations in the valley: 246 East High Ave., New Philadelphia, 803 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, 232 N. Wooster Ave., Strasburg, and the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard.

The following items are needed: canned cat and dog food, feeding utensils, disposable litter pans and cat litter, zip-lock bags (one gallon size), paper towels (in wrappers), sheets and towels, padlocks, extra-long heavy-duty extension cords, Polaroid 600 film (for documenting animals' identity), water hoses and spray nozzles, latex gloves, cotton balls (unopened, sterile), trash bags (50 gallon size), and pooper scoopers.

BUT, THE MOST URGENT NEED IS FOR MONETARY DONATIONS – Checks may be made payable to the LVMA Dr. Walter J. Ernst Veterinary Memorial Foundation (write ''Katrina Fund'' on the memo line).

Please help us in this worthy effort.  For more information, contact Tricia Herzig-McKinnon or Mark Wideman at (330) 343-6132 or email myfriend@tolandherzig.com.
