March 5, 1926 – May 5, 2000

A devoted husband & father passed away from an extended illness in his home at New Philadelphia on Friday, May 5th. He is survived by his wife of 41 years; Lena J. Barnhart, and children; Joe (Pam) Snyder, Charles (Chris) Snyder, Dave (Laura) Barnhart, Frances Barnhart survives him. Grandchildren: Jason, Noelle, & Brian Snyder; Jodi, Vince & Emily Snyder; Dave, Matthew, & John Barnhart.

He was preceded in death by parents John & Mae Barnhart, as well as siblings; Grace Beers, John Barnhart, & Mary McKay.

A veteran of WW II Pacific Theater, he served aboard LCI – 869 in the Solomon Islands attached to Flotilla 13 “The Boxing Black Cats”.

Russ retired from Greer Steel Co., Inc. in 1985 after 27 years of service. He was also employed by the Baltimore & Ohio, Nickel Plate, and Norfolk & Western Railroad.

Model railroading, studying family genealogy, history of WW11 & Civil War were his interests. He also enjoyed traveling, his pets, as well as spending time with his family.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, May 8, 2000 at 12:30 PM in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Dover. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM where Christian Wake services will be at 8 PM.
