Alan Harold Everhart

June 26, 1943 — July 29, 2008

Alan Harold "Al" Everhart, 65, of New Philadelphia, passed away Tuesday, Jul. 29, 2008, in Mercy Medical Center, Canton, following a brief, unexpected illness.

Born, Jun. 26, 1943, in Massillon, he was the son of the late Harold F. and Mary Steely Everhart. Al moved at a young age with his family to Strasburg, where he attended school, graduating high school there in 1962. He served honorably with the United States Army in Vietnam. Following his service time, Al married the love of his life, Linda Kaye Shaffer, on Feb. 5, 1967. The young couple set up housekeeping and started a family.

Al was an employee of Western Branch Diesel in Canton. In his youth he attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strasburg, and, in later years, the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia.

Al enjoyed hunting, and had a passion for restoring antique and classic cars. His pride and joys were his 1972 Buick Grand Sport Stage 1 convertible and his grandfather's 1930 Model A Ford. He was a member of the Buick GS National Car Club. Al enjoyed going to garage sales with Linda, as well as shopping for antiques and attending car shows.

Al is survived by his wife, Linda, and a daughter, Misti Kaye (Clark) Stalnaker of Ashland. He was blessed with five grandchildren, granddaughters, Taylor Mackenzie, Kayla Elizabeth and Cacie Madison Stalnaker, and twin grandsons, Carson Alan and Cameron Clark Stalnaker, all of Ashland. Other survivors include his mother-in-law, Kaye Shaffer of New Philadelphia; brother-in-law, Richard (Wanda) Shaffer, also of New Philadelphia; aunts uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who will all miss him greatly. Al will also be mourned by his best friend who shared his love of classic cars, Don Pettay of Freeport, and by his furry little buddies, Scruffy and Abby, who waited by the door for him when he came home from work.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark Alan Everhart, and by his father-in-law, Richard R. Shaffer.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Pastor Brian Flood of Faith Christian Church, New Philadelphia, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Family Life Center of St. Joseph Church, 614 N. Tuscarawas Ave., Dover. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday, 5-8 p.m. To sign an online register and share a fond memory of Al, please visit the Toland-Herzig Web site and click on obituaries.
