Albert C. Battalio

Albert C. Battalio, 86, of New Philadelphia passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 7, 2018 in the Community Hospice Truman House.

Born May 16, 1932 in Lisbon, Ohio he was a son of the late Anthony and Mary Rose Vichone Battalio. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Tony, Alfred, John and Thomas Battalio; sisters, Josephine Batcha, Rose Chini, Phyllis Garner, Helen Smith, and Lena Callahan.

Al proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge after 18 months of service. Following the war, he was employed at Union Camp for the next 38 years having retired in 1994. Al was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Quaker Club and was a committee member for the Italian-American Festival for many years. He enjoyed all sports, but especially loved playing bocce and softball. Al was also a favorite character around the neighborhood, always organizing wiffle ball games for the kids. He was an avid Notre Dame, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Locally, he followed the sporting activities of the New Philadelphia Quakers. As a fast pitch softball catcher, Al excelled as a member of the New Philadelphia Merchants. One of his most memorable accomplishments occurred when he and the Merchants gained victory over Eddie Feigner, “The King and His Court”, in New Philadelphia’s Quaker Stadium, where he smacked a home run, triple and a double. He was a gifted piano player, and was also known for making his famous spaghetti sauce.

Al will be sadly missed by his son, Albert J. “AJ” (Nicole) Battalio of Seattle, Washington; sisters, Angie Festi of Dover, Mary Marinelli of New Philadelphia and his grandson, Max Battalio.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover. Private family graveside services will be held in the Sacred Heart Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
