Albert J. Dalpiaz, 87, of Dover died Sunday, January 25, 2009 in the Hennis Care Centre at Dover.
Born January 4, 1922 in Dennison, Ohio he was a son of the late Jerry and Lucy Bartolis Dalpiaz. His brother, John Dalpiaz and a sister Pauline White also preceded him in death.
Albert was vice president of Tusco Service, Inc. of Dover for 13 years, retiring in
1972. He graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1940 and attended Kent State
University, Commercial Trades Institute at Birmingham, Alabama, and Coyne Electrical
School at Chicago, Illinois.
Albert served with the Air Force for three years during World War II and was
discharged as a sergeant. A member of the 837th Bomb Squadron, 487th Bombardment
Group, he served in England for 18 months and earned six Battle Stars. Albert's
Bomb Group flew 185 missions, including one over France on D-Day and another during
the Battle of the Bulge. As part of the engineering section, Albert repaired
damaged aircraft and test flew them with pilots.
He was a Member of the Dover VFW, Elks Club, and longtime parishioner of St.
Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed painting and was an avid gardener who took special
pride in his homegrown garlic and tomatoes. Albert also enjoying sharing tales of
his service in World War II. He took particular delight in speaking with pride of
his four grandchildren, Anthony, Gabriel, Matthew, and Michael.
Albert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Sikora Dalpiaz whom he married on August 2, 1948. He is also survived by two sons, Larry Dalpiaz of Dallas, Texas and Kevin (Nancy) Dalpiaz of North Royalton, Ohio; daughter, Elaine (David) Les Strang of Arlington, Virginia; two brothers, Louis (Helen) Dalpiaz of Dover and Archie Dalpiaz of Dennison and his four grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 10:30 am in the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends can call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm with Christian Wake services starting at 7:45 pm.
