Alfred G. "Poe" Saffell, 82, of Dover died Saturday, September 13, 2014 in the Park Village Health Care Center following a courageous battle with cancer that tested and strengthened his faith in God.
Born August 13, 1932 in New Philadelphia he was a son of the late Charles and Helen Miller Saffell. Al was also preceded in death by his brothers, William and Robert Saffell and sister, Betty Jane Wells.
He retired in 1994 from East Ohio Gas after 25 years of service. Al was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served on various committees including: church council, Eucharistic Minister, finance committee, cemetery committee, St. Joe's festival and was an active member of the St. Joe Seniors. He was also a member of the Dover Lions and K of C and was well known by many for selling Lions Club roses and mints. Al was a true handy man who was always willing to help a neighbor or friend with a project whenever he could.
A wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather, Al will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Jo Ann Berarducci Saffell whom he married on August 14, 1954; children, Michael (Jana) Saffell of New Philadelphia, David (Diane) Saffell of Wauseon, OH and Ronald (Cathy) Saffell of Dover; sister, Carol (Jim) Booth of New Philadelphia; seven grandchildren, Nicole Saffell, Anthony (Rachel) Saffell, Brittany Saffell, Krista (David) Kempf, Andrew Saffell, Gina (Stephen) Becker and Kendra Saffell and a great grandson, Rylan Saffell.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 17 at 10:30 am in the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover. Friends can call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover on Tuesday from 5-8 pm with Christian Wake services starting at 7:45. The family would like to thank everyone that showed so much support with cards and prayers, especially the staff at Park Village and Father Jimmy. We would also like to offer a special thanks to Jack & Pat Adams and Larry & Dianne Coulter for all of their love and support through this difficult time and for all the years of fun, love, and laughter.
