Alfred R. “Sharkey” Kaltenbaugh, 87, of Strasburg, Ohio died Friday, May 24, 2002 in his home following a brief illness.
He retired in 1976, as a foreman for the former Shenango Company at Dover where he worked for over 39 years.
Born June 5, 1914 in Dover, he was the son of the late Fred and Jennie McCartney Kaltenbaugh.
Sharkey attended the Indian Meadows Church of God. He ran against Jesse Owens in 1938 at the dedication of Crater Stadium.
He is survived by his wife Jane Burrell Kaltenbaugh with whom he would have celebrated 64 years of marriage on November 25.
He is also survived by four daughters and a son, Barbara (Jim) Birtcher and Cherryll (Gerald) Murphy both of Dover; Patti (Randy) Fearon of Strasburg, Jill (Bob) Herman of Beach City and Barry (Pat) Kaltenbaugh of Everett, Washington, a daughter in law, Cindy Kaltenbaugh of Littleton, Colorado along with fourteen grandchildren; Debbie and Brian Kaltenbaugh, Kris and Marc Birtcher, Tyler Wallick, Josh Murphy, Scott and Molly Fearon, Teresa & Bobby Herman, Derik and Jim Kaltenbaugh, Sarah and Tara Kaltenbaugh; two step grandchildren, Jerry and Larry Murphy; Sixteen great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Tim Kaltenbaugh, a brother, Rodney Kaltenbaugh and a sister, Maxine Andrews.
A public graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at 2pm in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens with Pastors Bill Mallernee and Byron Stewart officiating. A reception will follow the graveside service at the Indian Meadows Church of God. There are no calling hours.
