Alva J. McClelland, 75, a longtime Mineral City resident died Thursday, October 26, 2006 in Aultman Hospital at Canton following an extended illness.
Born February 9, 1931 in Greens Run, Ohio, he was the son of the late George B. and Carrie Judson McClelland.
Alva served as the former Mayor of Mineral City for twenty years and had previously also served as Constable for eight years.
He retired in 1995, as a foreman for Canton Drop Forge in Canton where he worked for twenty nine years.
Alva was a member of the First Christian Church in Dover. He was a founding member of the Mineral City Volunteer Fire Dept., 52 year member of the Post #519 American Legion in Mineral City, 32nd degree mason and member of the Caldwell F&AM #330 at Bolivar, former officer of the Eastern Star, and member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Canton. He was a graduate of Glouster High School. He proudly served his country in the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War and received a Purple Heart and received the Presidential Citation from General Ridgeway.
In addition to his parents, Alva was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean Douglas McClelland who died January 28, 1993. He was also preceded by five sisters and a brother, Riley McClelland, Tuney Snoke, Birtie Lou Everett, Lucille Erwin, Marguerite Hook, and Frances Triplett along with two additional infant siblings.
Alva is survived by three children, Ray Allen (Kay) McClelland of East Sparta, Rita J. (Gregory) Stephens of New Philadelphia, and Daniel Alva (Patty) McClelland of Bolivar; grandchildren, Tonya, Brent, Travis, Ray, Joshua, Danelle, Ryan, and Jason; three great grandchildren, Justin, Zachary, and Dylan; one sister, Lois (William) Tippi of Glouster, and one brother, Franklin (Shannon) McClelland of Magnolia.
A funeral service celebrating Alva�(TM)s life will be held Monday, October 30, 2006 at 2pm in the First Christian Church at Dover with David Dahlstein and Kenard Parrott officiating. Interment will follow in the Dover Burial Park where military graveside honors will be conducted by the Dover VFW. Friends may call at the First Christian Church in Dover on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. The Mineral City American Legion will honor Alva Sunday at 1:45pm and Masonic services will be held Sunday at 5:45pm.
