Proud Army veteran and longtime advocate of area veterans and their activities, Alvin F. Lengler, 88, of Dover, died Friday, June 22, 2007 in the Hennis Care Centre in Dover.
During World War II, Alvin was an Army gunner in the 89th Infantry Division. His involvement in local veterans organizations was far reaching. He was a life member of the Charles Hofer post of the American Legion at Strasburg, DAV chapter 67, The Carl Stoller post of the Veterans of Foreign War at New Philadelphia where he served as club chaplain and chaplain of the military burial detail, and the Military Order of Purple Heart #625 at Cambridge. He served as Junior Vice Commander, Chef DeGar Passa of Voiture at 40 et 8 of Dover, and was commander of the Tuscarawas County Council of American Legion.
He was born July 7, 1918 at Dover Township, the son of the late Sam &
Anna Pfeiffer Lengler.
In 1981, Alvin retired from the Eberhart Coal Company at Dover with 40 years of hard work and service, having served as both a truck driver and mine safety director over that time.
Alvin had a variety of interests ranging from hunting and fishing to gardening. He enjoyed reading books on wildlife and always looked forward to vacationing in the Smokey Mountains. Spending time with friends and family was of paramount importance to him. He was a member of the Sugarcreek Sportsman�(TM)s Club, Strasburg AARP, president of the Eberhart Coal Retirees, and 10th District Chairman of the Gifts for Yanks program.
He was a man of faith, and was an active member of St. John United Church of Christ at Strasburg, where he had served as an elder and member of church council.
For 61 years, Alvin was married to the love of his life, the former Susie E. Fulk. He was saddened by her death on November 18, 2000. In addition to his parents and wife, Alvin was preceded in death by: an infant sister, Viola Lengler; brother-in-law, Stanley Welsch; and sister-in-law, Helen Middaugh.
Surviving family members include: a daughter, Mary (Clarence) VonAllman; granddaughter, Ann (Corey) Swinderman; great-grandson, Kyle Swinderman; and sister, Dorothy Welsch all of Dover; a brother-in-law, Carl Middaugh of Sugarcreek; one niece and five great-nephews.
Alvin�(TM)s pastor, Rev. Gary Richard Friend, will officiate a service that celebrates his life on Tuesday, June 26, at 11:00 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg, with Alvin�(TM)s comrades from the New Philadelphia VFW conducting graveside honors, and members of the Strasburg American Legion serving as casket bearers. Following the burial, a meal for family and friends will be served in the fellowship hall at St. John United Church of Christ.
Friends may call in the funeral home on Monday from 1-3 and 5-8 p.m.
