Andrew “Andy” Lengyel, age 85, died peacefully in his New Philadelphia home on Sunday, March 21, 2004, after a long battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in May. Andy is also survived by eight loving children, John (Connie) Lengyel of Lake Elmo, Minnesota; Molly (Bill) Paris of Strasburg; Margaret (Terry) Olbrysh of Dublin, Ohio; Andrea (Louis) Settimio of Dover; Judy (Stan) Clegg of Grovetown, Georgia; Philip (Rose) Lengyel of Bolivar; Lisa (Tom) Weigand of Dover; and Felicia (Dan) Wassum of Coshocton, 16 grandchildren: Michael Thomas, Denise Slipka, Lindsay Alexander, Claire, Bill, Heather and Andy Paris, Nathaniel Olbrysh, Christy Hopson, Tony and Joe Settimio, Jeff and Sarah Clegg, Sarah Lengyel, Rachel and Andrew Weigand, and three great grandchildren. Three brothers, Charlie Lengyel of Pittsburgh, PA, Pete Lengyel of Strasburg, Nick Lengyel of Springfield, MO and two sisters, Maria Radeka of Spartanburg, SC and Betty Hill of Manchester, WV survive as well.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Lengyel of Weirton, WV; two brothers, John and Mike Lengyel and three sisters, Helen Snyder, Margaret Green and Anna Rohal.
He was the former owner of Stallard�(TM)s IGA in Dover and Andy�(TM)s Superette in Toronto, Ohio. He was a World War II veteran, an avid golfer and skilled card player. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Dover.
In celebration of his life, a funeral mass will be held Wednesday, March 24, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Following mass, a reception will be held in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard.
Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Dover VFW will conduct military rites at the funeral home at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday and a Christian Wake service will be held that night at 8:45 p.m.
