Anthony J. "Frip" Altier, 90, a lifelong Dover resident died Thursday, March 29, 2012 in Union Hospital following a brief illness.
Frip was a retired employee of the former Reeves Steel Company at Dover for over 36 years.
Born July 6, 1921 in Dover, he was the son of the late John P. and Mary (Figliola) Altier. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Margaret M. (Putnam) Altier along with five sisters and four brothers.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover and the Dover Eagles Lodge. He was also a member of the United Steelworkers Union, D.A.V., and the former Dover VFW and Dover Army Navy Club. "Frip" was an avid outdoorsman and had many interests including, golfing, bowling, hunting, and fishing and enjoyed raising Beagles that included several champions. He was a member of the Buckeye Beagle Club. He was also a big Dover Tornado and Tuscarawas Central Catholic fan. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was wounded in Strasbourg France in 1944 and was the recipient of a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He will be sadly missed by his family including three children John (Jan) Altier of Dover, Mary (Paul) Deibel of New Philadelphia, Toni (Dave) O'Brien of Thorndale, Pennsylvania; ten grandchildren Matthew (Emily) Altier of Dover, Frank Wott of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Andrew Wott and Kristopher Wott both of San Diego, California, Aaron (Cory) Deibel of Cleveland, Brian (Tracy) Deibel of Bay Village, Daniel (Emily) O'Brien of Lansdale, Pa., Timothy (Sarah) O'Brien of Lancaster, Pa., Stephen O'Brien of Boston, Mass., and Stephanie O'Brien of Wilimantic, Conn.; ten great grandchildren, Claire, Sophia, Mackenzie, Ella, Connor, Desmond, Darcy, Cleona, Clementine, and Taya.
A Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, April 2, 2012 at 11am in the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover with Fr. Matt Hoover officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery where the Dover VFW will conduct military honors. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Sunday from 4-7pm. Christian Wake Services will follow the visitation.
