Anthony Longer

Anthony “Tony” Longer, 77, of Dover died Friday, June 3, 2005 at Aultman Hospital following a sudden illness.

Tony retired in 1987 as the head of location and the design department of the Ohio Department of Transportation after 34 years of service. He was a licensed Professional Civil Engineer.

Born April 26, 1928 at Bridgeport, Ohio, son of the late John and Mary Widmar Longer.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dover Elks, and the Union Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. Tony was an Army veteran of WW II, and a 1952 graduate of Ohio University.

Tony is survived by his wife Josephine “Jo” David Longer with whom he would have celebrated 51 years of marriage on July 31, 2005.

He is also survived by two sons, David (Janice) Longer of Kirkwood, Pennsylvania, Mark (Dawn) Longer of San Diego, California; two daughters, Anne (William) Groben of Chester, Virginia, Mary Jo (David) Eaton of Malvern, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Greer Longer, Bill, Tony and Maria Groben; Two sisters, Rose (Nick) McKay of Shadyside and Josephine Nosal of Bridgeport; brother, John Longer of St. Clairsville; niece, Susan Nosal Vajen of Toledo; nephew, Dan Longer of Delaware.

In addition to his parents, Tony was also preceded in death by his sister Mary Berus, and brother-in-law Larry Nosal and sister-in-law Agnes Longer.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at 10:00 am in the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Cremation will follow the service, with private family interment of the ashes at Calvary Cemetery in Dover. Friends can call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory in Dover on Sunday, June 5, from 3-6 pm. Prayer services will begin at 3 pm.
