Antonio “Tony” Ionno, age 69, of Brewster, passed away Saturday, November 25, in Community Hospice’s Truman House, from injuries incurred in a November 14 motor vehicle accident that also claimed the life of his wife of 27 years, Susan Grillon-Ionno.
Born February 3, 1948 in Faeto, Italy, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Maria D’Apice Ionno. Tony immigrated to the United States in 1966 and became a U.S. citizen in 1971. He was employed as a truck drive for Superior Tank & Trailer of Beach City, a job he thoroughly enjoyed, as well as working as a carpenter and mechanic. Tony had also worked as a chef in Italy prior to coming to the U.S.
Tony never met a stranger. He was fond of truck stops and bad coffee, playing his guitar and making music with his friends, working on automobiles, and riding his Harley-Davidson. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his daughters, Anna Marie (Russell Porter) Ionno of Dover, and Marlena Haney of Midvale; his son, Brandon Grillon of Massillon; his grandchildren, Cody (Harlee Hamilton) and Corey Haney; his brother, Mario (Vickie) Ionno of Dover; his sister, Anna (Jim) Corey also of Dover; his his sisters-in-law, Patricia (Paul) Baughman and Jean Grillon; his nephews, Giuseppe, Michele and Giovanni (Stacy) Ionno, Wayne (Tracy) Clark and Christopher (Beth) Baughman; his nieces, Bianca Ionno and Kori (Joel) Hall; and his many dear aunts, uncles and cousins in Italy who have been so very kind and supportive.
In addition to his parents, and his wife, Susan, Tony was preceded in death by his sisters, Marlena and Adele Ionno.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Friday, December 1, 4 – 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will we concelebrated by Frs. Jimmy Hatfield and Mark Carter on Saturday, December 2, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Joseph Church, Dover. Burial will follow in St. Clement’s Cemetery, Navarre. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Family Life Center of St. Joseph Church (approximately 1 p.m.).
