Arthur D. Carr

Arthur D. “Art” Carr, 80, of Strasburg, died Monday, April 9, 2007 in Affinity Massillon Campus.

He was born February 11, 1927 at Beach City, the son of the late Charles & Ella Jane Wilhelm Carr.

For more than 20 years the Timken Company employed him. He spent most of his time working with scheduling allocations. A dedicated and detail oriented employee, Art, though, was defined by much more than just what he did for a living.

Family and faith were paramount in his life. He was, by all accounts, a loving father and grandfather, but will most be remembered as an adoring husband who honored his vows and cherished his late wife, Fern E. Shaffer Carr who died in the fall of 2002. His care for Fern in the latter years of her battle with illness spoke volumes about his character, and the depth of his love for her.

He had been a member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church for as long as anyone in the family can remember. “Active” doesn�(TM)t begin to describe the level of his involvement with the church. His prayerful dedication and leadership serve as example for future generations. He had seemingly served on every committee or group having anything to do with the governance of the church. For more than five decades he had, both as a member and leader, been affiliated with the Alpha Sunday School class. It was perhaps even a longer span of time that he was a part of the church choir, serving as its director for a short time as well.

Art loved the outdoors. He relished something as simple as a quite walk in the woods, but especially looked forward to planning family fishing trips to Canada and Put-in-Bay. For years, he was an avid fisherman, who loved going after Walleye on Lake Erie. He was also a small game hunter, and had a great sense for and understanding of his outdoor surroundings.

Art was a long time member of the Beach City Lions Club, and had formerly served as a Boy Scout leader. He was a big sports fan and closely followed the Indians, Cavs and Browns, and had also shown an interest for the local sports scene, rooting on his Strasburg Tigers, where he had once volunteered as the marching band announcer and basketball statistician.

He will be missed by many, but most so by the loving family he leaves behind, including: two children, Susan (Ed) Shafer of Warren, and Steve (Lin) Carr of Baltic; two grandchildren, Eric & Melissa Shafer of Warren; and a brother, Merle Carr of Dayton.

In addition to his parents and wife, Art was preceded in death by, an infant daughter, Helen Grace Carr, and his brother, Ed.

His life will be celebrated in a ceremony held, fittingly, in the Strasburg United Methodist Church, Thursday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Steven Court will officiate. Interment will be in Strasburg�(TM)s Grandview Union Cemetery. Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.
