Arthur Dell Jr.

Arthur “Art” Dell Jr., 95, a lifelong Dover resident died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022 in the Park Village Healthcare Center at Dover following an extended period of declining health along with Covid.

Born April 17, 1926 in Dover, he was the son of the late Arthur Sr. and Pearle (Kuhn) Dell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margaret (Herzig) Dell who died May 12, 2015; two sisters, Gertrude Franks and Isabelle Meese; a niece, Sandra Lee Franks and a nephew, Terry Meese.

Art retired as Superintendent of Postal Operations at the Dover Post Office and was also previously Postmaster in Zoar. He worked for the U.S. Postal service for 32 years until his retirement in 1983.

He graduated from Dover High School in 1944. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War ll and was stationed in the Philippines as part of the 37th Infantry Division. He was a 72-year member of the Dover American Legion where he formerly served as Commander and member of the former White Clefs of Dover Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover, a former member and Past Exalted Ruler of the former Dover Elks, and the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. In his earlier years, Art loved bowling and golf and was Past President of the Dover-N. Phila Bowling League. He was also an avid Cleveland Browns fan. He will be remembered for his positive spirit and attitude and was a man who never complained.

Art is survived by three nieces and a nephew, Linda (Ted) Swaldo of Canton, Judy (Bob) Moore of Westerville, Peggy (Rick) Holmes and John (Joyce) Herzig both of Dover.

Art’s life will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 10 beginning at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover with Pastor Dotty Hartzell officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park where the New Phila VFW will conduct military honors. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10-11 am.
