Atty. John L. Woodard, 89, of Dover, Ohio died Wednesday, March 22, 2006 in his home as the result of a sudden cardiac arrest.
Born October 16, 1916 in Uhrichsville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Clancy and Melissa Simpson Woodard.
John was a practicing attorney in Dover for over 66 years. He was recognized by the Ohio Bar Association for 65 years of practice in 2005. He was also the former Solicitor for the City of Dover and served on the 97th General Assembly of the House of Representatives.
John was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Dover where he previously served as Treasurer. He was also a life member of the Dover Kiwanis Club, Tuscarawas F&AM #59 in Dover, member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Tuscarawas County Senior Citizens, Board of the Dover Public Library, Atwood Yacht Club, Ohio State Bar Assn., and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. John was a 1934 graduate of Uhrichsville High School. He received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1940. He remained an avid Ohio State fan. He also served in the U.S. Navy. He received the Distinguished Service Citation from the American Lawyers Quarterly. He was also a Dover Tornado fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Cooper Woodard who died April 2, 2000.
John is survived by his son, Jack Woodard of Columbus and daughter, Marsha Sue (Phil) Daniels of Gahanna; five grandchildren, Mark (Aurea) Daniels, Corey Daniels, Brian (Dasha) Daniels, Erin (Michael)Sujka-Ossman and Scott (Mary) Bonner;two great grandchildren, Sophia and Mallory Daniels. He is also survived by a sister, Libby (Paul) Stearns of Pickerington.
A service celebrating John�(TM)s life will be held Saturday, March 25, 2006 at 10:30 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover with Pastor Larry Black officiating. Entombment will be in the Garden of Peace Mausoleum at Dover Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday (today) from 5-8pm.
