Barbara Huff Ellwood, 87, of Lancaster, passed away there in Pickering House on
December 1, 2016.
Barbara was born July 12, 1929, in Canton, to the late Francis and Adella Portz Huff.
She was the youngest of six children, and her siblings included Kathryn Strong, Robert
Huff, Margaret Immel, Dorothy Pettibone and Richard Huff. Barbara graduated from Dover High School in 1947, and Ohio Wesleyan University in 1951. While a student at Ohio Wesleyan, Barbara belonged to the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and the Kappa Delta Pi education honorary. She received her bachelor's degree in secondary education, and taught school in Tuscarawas County, Long Beach, California, and Lancaster.
On December 29, 1951, Barbara married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Ellwood. Barbara and Richard first met as first grade classmates in 1935. The couple had three children and five grandchildren whom Barbara loved very much, they are: son, Brockton Ellwood and his wife, Margaret of Tucson Arizona, and their two children, Sarah and Carter; son, Brian Kipling Ellwood of Los Angeles, California; and daughter, Ann Ellwood Van Wey of Phoenix, Arizona, and her three children Cooper, Colin, and Cole.
Barbara was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was an great fan of Ohio State University football, having spent many Saturdays attending OSU football games, including watching her beloved Richard during his playing days as an Ohio State Buckeye.
Barbara and Richard resided in Lancaster for over fifty years. She was a long-time
member of Lancaster’s First Presbyterian Church, and involved in numerous civic and
charitable organizations, including the Fairfield Heritage Association, Friends of the
Fairfield County District Library, Lancaster YMCA, Meals-on-Wheels, and Froebel Club. Barbara's deep love for history led to her involvement in the restoration of both the Georgian and the Sherman Houses. She volunteered as a docent at both museums. She was very proud of Lancaster and she truly cared about those in the community.
A memorial service for Barbara will be held Wednesday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Dr. William C. Haggis officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will follow in East Avenue Cemetery, New Philadelphia. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
