Bertha M. Miller, 92, the youngest, and last surviving of 14 children born to the late John and Amanda Schieby Miller, died Saturday, August 4, 2007 in the Country Club Retirement Campus, where she had resided for the past three years.
She was born August 23, 1914 at York Township. The family moved to Dover in 1928, and set up residence in the house that Bertha would call home for 76 years.
Bertha was a graduate of Dover High School and had some addition training that prepared her well for her 41 years as an executive secretary with the former Hercules Company, now White Engine at Canton.
She was a longtime member of St. John(TM)s United Church of Christ, Dover where a generation of young people would remember her as their Sunday School teacher. She had a terrific spirit and was always fun to be around, whether in Bridge Club, on the golf course, or at any of the productions at the Little Theater where she enjoyed volunteering as an usher. She also took pride in her affiliation with the Business & Professional Women, a group she was active in for many years.
Bertha is survived by a loving family that includes: two nieces, Doris Jarvis of Arizona, and Iva Faye Rausch of Dover; four nephews, Leo (Fran) Smith of North Carolina, Cliff (Betty) Mathias of Lyndhurst, Terry (Lorraine) Mathias of Waynesville, and George Edward (Sue) Meese of New Philadelphia. Her extended family also includes many great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, nine sisters, four brothers, three nieces, two nephews, and one great nephew preceded Bertha in death.
A funeral service that celebrates Bertha(TM)s life will be held Wednesday, August 8, at 1:00 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover with Rev. Michael Lowry officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Friends may call in the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of services at 1:00 p.m.
Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Bertha by visiting the “obituaries” link on the funeral home(TM)s website.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer(TM)s Association, 4815 Munson St. NW, Canton, OH 44718.
