Betty J. Becker, 81, of 217 Rail Ave., Sebring, Fla., and formerly of the Strasburg-Beach City, O., area, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in Fisher-Titus Medical Center Memorial Home in Norwalk, O., following an extended illness.
Born July 2, 1922, in Fairfield Township, Tuscarawas County, she was the daughter of the late John I. and Jennie A. (Strawn) Brown. She and her husband of 59 years owned and operated Becker Falls Farms north of Strasburg, O., for 35 years prior to moving to Florida in 1984.
A 1939 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Betty was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg, O. Betty spent her entire life helping her family and friends, being the underlying motivator in many community service projects. She was an avid seamstress and loved to crochet and do crossword puzzles. She was a former 4-H adviser in Tuscarawas County for many years.
Betty is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jenny L. and Walter Krantz of Dyer, Ind.; a daughter, Barbara J. Wurzel of Norwalk, O.; two sons and daughters-in-law, D. Edward Jr. and Linda Becker of Strasburg, O., and Norwood L. “Woody” and Katherine Becker of Sugarcreek, O.; a brother-in-law, Robert J. and June Becker of Dover, O.; a sister-in-law, Daisy V. Brown of Mineral City, O.; five grandsons, D. Edward Becker III and Kristina Bechtold of Strasburg, O., Robert B. and Shawnette Becker of Columbus, O., Ryan L. and Kim Becker of Strasburg, O., David M. Csonka and Dana Wyatt of Alliance, O., and Donald Patrick Wurzel III of Norwalk, O.; seven granddaughters, Barbara M. and Robert Kappel of Woodstock, Ga., Sara C. Krantz of Atlanta, Ga., Teri L. Wheeler of Norwalk, O., Vicki J. and Frank Harp of Norwalk, O., Donna P. and Jim Zibbel of Millbury, O., Melinda J. Becker of Sugarcreek, O., and Cassaundra R. Becker of Sugarcreek, O.; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Becker Sr., in 1999; a brother, William D. Brown; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Wilma) Hawk and Mrs. Neil (Erva) Durbin; a son-in-law, Donald P. Wurzel II; and brother-in-law Warren Becker.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg or one�(TM)s favorite charity.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg with Pastor Jerry Schuessler officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Strasburg.
