Betty J. Gibbs, 90, of Dover died Sunday, March 26, 2017 at her home following an extended illness.
Born May 14, 1926 in New Philadelphia, Ohio she was a daughter of the late George and Mae Espenschied Schumacher. Betty was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Kenneth Gibbs on July 21, 2014 and a son, James K. Gibbs.
Betty started her working career as a Bookkeeper at Deardorff Hardware, and she also worked at General Telephone, Warner & Swasey, Department of Forestry and finally retiring in 1993 from the Tuscarawas County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities where she served as Secretary. She attended Dover Alliance Church where she was involved with Women In the World Bible Study and a Precept Study Group that she enjoyed very much. Betty was a former member of the Mu Chapter of Alpha Pi Sigma Sorority, Tuscarawas Valley Chapter 3904 of AARP where she served as Treasurer and Membership Chairman, Tusco Traveliers Camping Club, Akron Unit of the Airstream Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Democratic Women of Tuscarawas County and volunteered for RSVP. Betty was a tremendous woman of faith who was also a talented artist, dancer and singer.
A loving and gracious mother, Betty never failed to tell her children how much she loved them and would always put their needs above her own. She will be sadly missed by her son, Robert K. Gibbs, and companion Heather Immel of Dover; daughter, Deborah (David) Kerr of Cleves.
Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 30 at 1:30 pm at the Dover Burial Park with Rev. The family would like to thank all of the home health aides that cared for Betty during her long battle with dementia.
