Betty K. Thomas, 72, a lifelong resident of Strasburg died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Canton following an eight year battle with leukemia.
Born September 7, 1936 in Strasburg, she was the daughter of the late H. Keene and Florence (Peters) Weber. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Weber and her longtime companion, Kenneth Grages.
Betty was a retired accountant and storeroom clerk for the former Reeves Steel Company at Dover where she worked for many years.
She was an active member of the First Moravian Church in Dover where she volunteered in many church functions. She was a graduate of Strasburg Franklin High School. She was also very active in the Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society and was presented the First Families of Tuscarawas County award. She could also often be seen working in her flower garden. She was also a cheerleader for all of her grandchildren's activities.
Betty is survived by four daughters, Cheryl (husband, Tim) Reiss of Dover, Debra Swaldo of New Philadelphia, Cynthia (husband, Joseph) Avery of Lecanto, Florida and Bev Ann (husband, David) Brookshire of Canton; eleven grandchildren, Keena (Thomas) Sosnowski, LCPL Joe (Laura) Reiss, 2Lt. Jon Reiss, Nicholas (Jessica) Swaldo, Donald Swaldo, Daniel Swaldo, Trisha Avery, Melissa Avery, SPC Ginnett (James) Codington, Kristopher Brookshire, and Lauren Brookshire; six great grandchildren; a sister, Linda (husband, Woodrow) Beitzel of Stone Creek, a sister in law, Ramona Weber of New Philadelphia and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service celebrating Betty's life will be held Monday, March 30, 2009 at 10:30am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Rev. Allen Bergmann officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. A reception will follow in the First Moravian Church Fellowship Hall at Dover. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-7pm.
