Betty M. Gallagher

Longtime Dover resident, Betty M. Gallagher, died Wednesday evening, November 18, 2009, in the Fairmont (WV) General Hospital. She was 85.

Born May 13, 1924 at Dover, she was the daughter of the late John Charles and Betty Evelyn Hooper Nichols LaCroix.

A 1942 graduate of Dover High School, Betty spent most of the next eight years working with the Western Union Telegraph Company.

She was a bookkeeper by trade, and retired, after 10 years of service, in 1984 as an account clerk with the Tuscarawas County Department of Human Services, now Tuscarawas County Job & Family Services. She also used her bookkeeping skills to help several small businesses in the area.

She was a member of the Fourth Street Church of Christ in Dover

On May 6, 1949, Betty wed the love of her life, William S. Gallagher. The two shared more than twenty years of marriage before his passing on May 2, 1970.

She is survived by a loving family that includes: three children, William Lee Gallagher of New Philadelphia, Rebecca (Satish) Kokrady of Columbus, and Brent Alan (Janie) Gallagher of Fairmont, WV; four grandchildren, Shannon (Walter) Stevens, Ryan (Kay) Gallagher, Amy (Chris) Saunders, and Jason Gallagher; two great grandchildren, Kaylyn and Matthew Stevens; a sister, Dorothy Thompson of West Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by: two brothers, Charles and Donald; and a sister, Louise.

Pastor Tim Hatfield will officiate a service that celebrates Betty's life on Sunday, November 22 at 4:00 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Friends may call in the funeral home Sunday from 2-4 p.m.

A public graveside service will be held Monday, November 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the Dover Burial Park.
