Betty M. Hambleton Shutt, 86, of Strasburg, died Friday, Jul. 15, 2011, in her home, after a long battle with Alzheimer�(TM)s disease.
Born May 2, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Ruby Sidlinker Berry. Betty graduated from high school in Rochester, Mich., and married her first husband, Carl Hambleton. The couple moved to Ohio in the late 1940�(TM)s when Carl found work as a dairyman there. They reared six children and were together nearly thirty years, before Carl�(TM)s death in 1972. In 1979, Betty married Joseph “Joe” Shutt, and the couple enjoyed nearly twenty-seven years of marriage before Joe�(TM)s passing in 2006.
Betty was employed by Union Hospital for over ten years as part of the housekeeping staff. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, and a faithful member of Strasburg United Methodist Church. In her spare time, Betty greatly enjoyed reading as well as working word puzzles.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharalee (Michael) Bowersock of Dover; four sons, John (Carrie) Hambleton of Strasburg, Bill and Bryan (Sarah) Hambleton, both of New Philadelphia, and Bruce (Kay) Hambleton of Simpsonville, SC; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother, Jeanette Brimm, Gertrude (Gene) Tipple and Ivan Berry, all of Michigan; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Carl, and her husband, Joseph, Betty was preceded in death by a son, Richard Hambleton; and by two brothers, Bob and Jack Berry.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Strasburg on Tuesday, 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Lynda K. Masters officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Union Cemetery, Strasburg.
