Betty M. Smith

Betty M. Smith, 96, of Strasburg passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 in the Hennis Care Centre at Bolivar.

She was born on September 1, 1926 and was a daughter of the late Herman and Helen Knodel Dodge. Betty was also preceded in death by her husband, Edwin J. Smith on September 13, 1972; sister, Marian Dodge; and her daughter, Lynn Smith.

Along with her husband, Betty was the co-owner of Smitty’s Bar and Grill in Strasburg. For over 25 years Betty was not only the co-owner, but at various points, the head cook, waitress and busboy. When she wasn’t working, Betty always found time to take care of Lynn and follow her other children with their school activities. She was a member of the St. John United Church of Christ at Strasburg, and in her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards with her friends and gardening.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Stephanie (Ed) Yackey of Strasburg, Eddae “Jeanne” Gatling of North Carolina; step-daughter, Yvonne Plumer of Florida; brother, Don (Lucille) Dodge of Sugarcreek; grandchildren, Carla (Paul) Schauer, Kyle (Mary) Yackey, Kendra Wolgamott, Kara Dooley, Vijay Karode, Nathaniel Gatling, Stephen (Julie) Plummer, Natalie (Darryl) McSwain, Ryan Plummer, Wendy Plummer, Christian (Heather) Plummer; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Brynna, Aric Schauer; Carson and Kiera Yackey; Logan and Nora Wolgamott; Simon Dooley; Stephen and Nicholas Plummer; Katie Kaylor, Kai McSwain; Ryan Plummer II, Natalie Phillips, Noah and Hailey Plummer; Ella and Lucy Carbone; Ryan Atha, Thomas and McKinsey Plummer; and several great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd starting at 11:00 am in the St. John United Church of Christ at Strasburg with Pastor Jason Rissler officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. The family will be greeting friends at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.
