The director was so impressed with his shaded relief maps that in 1974 he sent Bill to Switzerland to work with the Topographic Survey of Switzerland in Walbern for six weeks. Bill was known as the "Artist Doctor" due to his ability to see and fix impossible situations. The United States Department of the Interior Director, James M. Ridenour wrote on Bill's retirement, and 22 years as an employee indicating his shaded relief rendition of park landscapes, "Have brought national and international acclaim to Park Service maps. They have added immeasurably to both the usefulness and the artistic beauty of the maps". The American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, Donald L. Carrick, Acting Chairman stated that Bill's map of Acadia National Park was cited for Outstanding Achievement and Best in Category for which Bill received a Certificate of Merit from CSM. The United States Department of the Interior Director, George Hertzog said, "The 1969 executive orientation and briefing presentation were of such exceeding and superior quality as to qualify for special recognition. It is a pleasure to advise you that you have been granted a $100 special Act Award".
