Bill Von Allmen

Bill von Allmen, 85, of Dover and formerly of Frederick, Maryland died Thursday, September 12, 2013 in the Park Village Health Care Center at Dover following a battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born May 20, 1928 he was a son of the late John and Louisa Feutz von Allmen. He graduated in 1948 from Dover High School and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. Bill worked at Joy Manufacturing and the Department of the Interior, Division of Coal, in New Philadelphia before accepting a job with the Publications Division Branch of Technical Illustration where he worked for 12 years making Topographic maps for the U.S. Geological Survey. For the next 22 years he worked for the National Park Service as a Visual Information Specialist. The director was so impressed with his shaded relief maps that in 1974 he sent Bill to Switzerland to work with the Topographic Survey of Switzerland in Walbern for six weeks. Bill was known as the "Artist Doctor" due to his ability to see and fix impossible situations. The United States Department of the Interior Director, James M. Ridenour wrote on Bill's retirement, and 22 years as an employee indicating his shaded relief rendition of park landscapes, "Have brought national and international acclaim to Park Service maps. They have added immeasurably to both the usefulness and the artistic beauty of the maps". The American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, Donald L. Carrick, Acting Chairman stated that Bill's map of Acadia National Park was cited for Outstanding Achievement and Best in Category for which Bill received a Certificate of Merit from CSM. The United States Department of the Interior Director, George Hertzog said, "The 1969 executive orientation and briefing presentation were of such exceeding and superior quality as to qualify for special recognition. It is a pleasure to advise you that you have been granted a $100 special Act Award".

Bill was a member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren serving on the Church Board and Finance Committee and was also a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the American Legion Post 205 in Dover, AARP and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Marlen Schoelles von Allmen; nieces, Janet (David) Bierkortte of Wheeling, West Virginia, Cynthia (Gerald) Merrelle, Melinda (Jeffery) Bagshaw and great neiece Darby Bagshaw of Wilmington, North Carolina; great nephews, Francis David (Amy) Bierkortte of Wheeling, Patrick Bierkortte of Las Vegas and Christopher Bierkortte also of Wheeling.
