Burman C. Berndt, 80, of Dover, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in Union Hospital.
He was born March 29, 1930 at Dover, the son of the late William and Henrietta Huffman Berndt.
He retired from the maintenance department at Twin City Hospital. Previous to that, Burman had spent nearly 25 years with Warner-Swasey, later Gradall, at New Philadelphia.
His wife, the former Pauldina Fragasse, preceded Burman in death on May 20, 1979.
Known for his great sense of humor, Burman lived life to the fullest. He always put family first and was especially proud of his grandchildren.
Most people have hobbies, but Burman's love for woodworking could be described as a passion. He was very talented and paid terrific attention to detail on projects as small as building birdhouses with his grandsons when they were young, to as large as cabinetry and beautiful pieces of furniture. He was a big sports fan, too. He loved college basketball and enjoyed following the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates in the pro ranks.
Burman also honorably served his country in the Army during the Korean War.
He is survived by a loving family which includes: a son, Robert "Bob" Berndt, and a daughter, Mary Ann (Jeff) Smith, both of Dover; his two grandsons, Brandon and Matthew Smith of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Burman was also preceded in death by: seven brothers, Paul, Carl, Edward, Lester, Milton, Donald and Dean; two sisters, Marion Burkholder and Henrietta Smith; and his companion of 26 years, Mary LaCroix.
A public graveside service will be held Saturday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover.
Those wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Burman by visiting the obituaries link on the funeral home's website.
It is suggested that memorial gifts be made to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, 6895 Dover-Zoar Road, Dover, Ohio 44622 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
