C. Bernard “Bernie” Myers, 96, of Dover died Sunday, April 4, 2004 in Union Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born December 10, 1907 at Dillonvale, Ohio, Bernie was the son of the late William D. & Pearl McFarland Myers.
Bernie retired from the J.C. Penney Company in 1968. He had served as manager of the company(TM)s former Dover location for many years. He began working with Penney(TM)s after graduating from Canton McKinley High School in 1925. He worked his way up from the stockroom to manage several Michigan stores before accepting the Dover position.
A man of faith, he was a longtime, active member of the First United Methodist Church at Dover where he served on several committees over the years.
He had always taken a keen interest in the community and had been involved with the Dover Rotary, Tuscarawas County YMCA, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Tuscarawas County and Tuscarawas Lodge #59 F & AM at Dover. He also enjoyed his volunteer work with Union Hospital delivering Mobile Meals to area residents.
Bernie loved the outdoors and was a self-taught naturalist who could identify almost any form of plant or wildlife found on one of his many nature hikes. One of his favorite activities was to serve as a tour guide and lecturer at the Wilderness Center in Wilmot.
He loved sports and passionately followed the Cleveland Indians and his beloved Dover Tornadoes.
He was perhaps best known as “Bernie Boy Scout,” having been associated with scouting for over 80 years " dating back to the inception of the Boy Scouts of America. He earned his Eagle Scout in 1923 and was a member of Boy Scout Troop 4 in Canton. He had served as Director and Chaplain for various scouting activities at Camp Tuscazoar and Seven Ranges. In January 1998, Bernie was one of the select few individuals that year to receieve the National Distinguished Eagle Scout award in recognition of his contributions to scouting and his community.
For his years of caring and dedication to these and many other worthwhile groups, in 2001, Bernie was awarded the prestigious Zeisberger-Heckawelder Achievement Medal given by the Tuscarawas County Historical Society.
