C. Sumner Mullet, 89, of Beach City died suddenly from injuries he sustained at his home on Tuesday, April 8, 2008.
He was retired from Openings Inc. in Canton, formerly known as Interstate Sash and Door Co., after 40 years of service.
Born March 20, 1919 in Strasburg he was a son of the late Clarence and Maude Correll Mullet. Two sisters, Marguerite Denzer and Lleita Mae Swihart and an infant brother, also preceded him in death.
Sumner was a life member at St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg where he served on council, Men's Fellowship, and helped build houses for Habitat for Humanity. He was also a former member of the Beach City Grange and a current member of the American Legion and the Wilderness Center. His true passion was the outdoors and was considered a naturalist, having raised Pheasants for the Division of Wildlife and was an authority on Bluebirds. His love of nature extended to his hobbies, which included beekeeping, gardening, hunting and growing fruit in his orchard. Sumner was a craftsman and very artistic, which was evident in his woodshop, where he created beautiful pieces for his family and friends. He was an Army veteran of WW II and served with the 16th Engineers Battalion Combat Corp. where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also trained troops at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. In Sumner's life, family came first and nothing pleased him more than spending time with his children and grandchildren who fondly remember him sledding with them during a good snowfall.
A wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather, Sumner will be sadly missed by his wife of almost 64 years, Ruth Muskopf Mullet whom he married on April 28, 1944. He is also survived by two daughters, Rebecca (George) Reymond of Dover and Cynthia (Johnny) White of Mississippi; son, Mark (Diane) Mullet of Colorado; two sisters, Monna Bee Wilson of Fairborn, Ohio and Janice I. Mullett of St. Paris, Ohio; three grandchildren, Sarah, Meredith and Stephanie.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 2:00 pm in the St. John United Church of Christ at Strasburg with Rev. Gary Friend officiating. Interment will be in the South Lawn Cemetery at Beach City where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends can call at the church one-hour prior to the service on Saturday. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at Dover are handling the arrangements.
