Carl F. Myers, 93, a lifelong resident of Strasburg died Tuesday, May 4, 2010 in his home on the family farm where he was born and raised following a period of declining health. The farm has been in the family for 169 years.
Carl was born on the Myers farm on May 1, 1917 and was the son of the late Oden and Elizabeth (Aebersold) Myers.
Carl retired in 1982 from the Timken Company in Canton where he was employed for over 35 years.
He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strasburg and the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau. He was a 1935 graduate of Strasburg High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was stationed in Germany, France, and the Pacific Theater. An avid outdoorsman, Carl enjoyed farming, gardening, and hunting. He also loved sports and enjoyed Strasburg Tiger basketball and Cleveland Indians baseball.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Gladys Moomaw Myers who died May 25, 2005. He was also preceded by his son in law, Jim Samsa, a granddaughter, Malia Myers, three brothers, Dwight, Wayne, and Willard Myers and a sister, Margaret Charton.
Carl is survived by two daughters and two sons Sandra Samsa, Susan (husband, Steve) Zimmerman, and Kenneth (wife, Adena) Myers all of Strasburg and Fred (wife, Lisa) Myers of Euclid; eight grandchildren, Mark (wife, Andrea) Samsa, Lisa (husband, Dave) Baird, Anne (husband, Michael) Gunther, Elizabeth (husband, Ryan) Dean, Jacob Myers, Scott Zimmerman, Sarah Zimmerman, and Jason Myers; seven great grandchildren, Jaclyn, Brittany, Dylan, Olivia, Lauren, Elaina, and Brady and his feline companion, Boots.
A celebration of Carl?s life will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11am in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strasburg with Rev. Steven Woyen officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife, Gladys in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover on Friday from 6-8pm.
