Carl Frederick Schriever, age 94, of Dover, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 6th in the loving care of his children. Born and raised in Canton, Ohio on November 2, 1917, he was the son of the late Carl A. Schriever, Sr. and Anna (Church) Schriever.
Carl attended McKinley High School and received an apprenticeship as a die maker at Menegay Machine in Canton, Ohio. In 1942, Carl bought the historical Jones Lock House #12 property along the Ohio and Erie Canal on State Route 800 and married the love of his life, Irma Fern (Varadi) Schriever, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage until her death in 2003.
For 30 years, Carl never missed a day of work as a tool and die maker at Reeves Steel. During WWII, he made mess kits and ammunition boxes for the war effort. In 1968, he opened a business with his son, Carl, called the State Route 800 Machine Shop.
Carl was passionate about politics and religion and was an avid reader of The Bible and the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, who influenced his philosophy of peace and non-violence. He was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover.
A farmer at heart, Carl loved caring for his small herd of cattle, horses and animals of all kinds. He loved to garden, plant trees and his hobby of woodworking. Carl loved tennis and figure skating, often seen during his younger years at local ponds performing figure 8's, spins and "flying Dutchman's." He also enjoyed walking his fields along the Tuscarawas River collecting Indian arrowheads and had a collection of buffalo nickels and Indian pennies.
As a young boy, Carl enjoyed riding his bicycle to spend summers with his uncles, one who lived on a farm in Newton Falls and another who owned a cheese factory near Millersburg. Later in life, Carl also was a friend of the Amish community, enjoying weekly trips to Farmerstown, Ohio, auctions.
As the son of a music professor, Carl enjoyed singing German, Swiss and American songs which he shared with family and friends.
Carl lived a joyful life and was known by his neighbors and those who knew him as a kind and generous man eager to help others. He truly was a "friend to man," a quote from 'House by the Side of the Road' by Sam Walter Foss, one of many poems enjoyed by the family.
Together, Carl and his wife Irma had three sons; Kim M. (Jane) and Carl D. (Wilma Synder) of Dover and William L. "Bill" of the home, and two daughters; Nancy L. Rabinowitz and Marilyn K. Salame both of Dover. Also surviving are six grandchildren; Steven Schriever of San Antonio, TX, Scott Schriever of Mason, OH., Wani Pawlak of Palisades Park, N.J, Amanda Rabinowitz of Akron, Jessica Schriever of Dover and Kara Salame of Columbus, OH.
Other surviving loved ones are two sisters; Susan "Sue" (Carl) Geib of North Canton, Isabelle Seaman of Massillon, brother-in-law; Sam Lech, along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by brothers, William "Billy," who died as a young boy, and Robert of Massillon, also a sister, Marilyn Lech of North Canton and brother-in-law Edward Seaman.
