Carol Jean Varns Freshwater, 92, of Dover passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2021 in the Country Club Retirement Center at Dover, under the care of Crossroads Hospice.
Born in Strasburg on January 25, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur and Olga Weinman Varns. She was raised on her parent’s 80 acre farm near Strasburg and was a graduate of Strasburg High School. On November 24, 1949 Carol married Thad G. Freshwater in St. John United Church of Christ at Strasburg. Together they lived in Dover and raised three children and shared 62 years of marriage prior to Thad’s passing on May 27, 2012.
Carol worked for over twenty years for the Dover City Schools as a cook at South Elementary, and at the high school. She and Thad were longtime active members of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover, were involved with cooking for banquets, serving on different committees and boards, providing nursery care, and were faithful members of the Martha Circle. Carol and Thad were volunteers for Mobile Meals and members of the Buckeye Bacon Burners Traveling Camping Club. Yearly family vacations were never missed, and Carol and Thad had traveled to 49 of the states…..all but Hawaii. Their biggest passion was being with family and following the activities of their grandchildren.
