Catherine A. “Katie” Polka Murray, 84, of Winfield, died peacefully Saturday, September 3, 2005 in Union Hospital.
For more than 20 years, she worked with GTE, holding a variety of positions before retiring as an assignment clerk.
Katie was born in Alderson, Oklahoma on November 12, 1920, the 9th of ten children of the late Frank & Mary Polka.
She was a 1939 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and always enjoyed sharing that her favorite classroom teacher was the great Woody Hayes. Since coming to the area from Oklahoma, Katie had been a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church.
She was very proud of her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Katie also looked forward to social get-togethers with her friends from TOPS as well as the GTE retirees group.
For more than 58 years, Katie shared her life with her loving husband, John Woodrow Murray, Sr., who died June 6.
Surviving members of the family include: two sons; John (Cheryl) Murray and Jim (Linda) Murray all of Dover; four grandchildren, Troy Murray and Carrie of Akron, Michelle Murray of Madison, Wisconsin, Tyler Murray of New Philadelphia and Tanner Murray of Columbus; two sisters, Rosemary Diem of Indiana, and Barbara Martin of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Katie was preceded in death by three brothers “Jiggs,” Carl, and Joe, as well as four siblings who died in Poland before her family came to the US.
In celebration of Katie�(TM)s life, Rev. LuAnn Youngman will conduct a funeral ceremony Thursday, September 8, at 11:00 a.m. in the Winfield United Methodist Church. Interment will be beside her husband on the Murray family farm. Following the burial, family and friends will be received back at the church for a fellowship meal.
