Catherine "Katie" Tyree, 92 of Dover, passed away Saturday March 12, 2011, following a brief illness. She has been joyously reunited with her husband Curtis William Tyree.
Katie was born on October 18, 1918, to John and Helen Yakus, both immigrants from Yugoslavia who moved to Dover in the early 1900's and lived on Washington Street. She graduated from Dover High School in 1937, and married Curtis on October 14, 1939. During World War II, Katie worked at the Reeves factory until the men returned home from the war. From 1968-1976 Katie and Curtis lived at, and were caretakers of, the Reeves mansion. She later worked at the Dover High School in the cafeteria. She was a life-long resident of Dover and for the last six years was a happy resident of New Dawn Nursing Home, where she made many new friends. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, playing bingo, and listening to music.
Katie is survived by three children, Richard (Delpha) Tyree of Columbus, Nancy (Edward) Wilson of Dover, and Curt "Kirby" (Blanche) Tyree of Tuscarawas. Along with five grandchildren, Kathleen Gwynne (Steve Strohl) of Columbus, Adam (Debbie) Wilson of Dover, Dawn Tyree of Columbus, Donna (T.J.) Hersch of New Albany, and Curtis Robert Tyree of Tuscarawas. Katie always felt blessed to have known and spent time with her great-grandchildren, Connor Gwynne and Lauren and Kyle Strohl of Columbus, Tyree and Bailey Wilson of Dover, and Avery Hersch of New Albany. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins from around the country round out the large, extended family. Katie is preceded in death by her loving husband Curtis, her parents John and Helen, and her brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 1pm in the Dover Burial Park with Dr. William Haggis officiating. Those unable to attend or who may wish to express a fond memory of Katie may sign the online guestbook by visiting the "obituaries" link on the funeral home website at www.tolandherzig.com
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Grace Lutheran Church of Dover, 216 N. Wooster Ave. in Dover, where Katie was a lifetime member.
