Charles Douglas "Boot" Wood

October 13, 1945 — January 21, 2013

Charles Douglas "Boot" Wood, 67, of Strasburg went home to be with his Lord on Monday, January 21, 2013 at Union Hospital after bravely fighting countless health challenges to the end.

Born on October 13, 1945 in Coffee County, Alabama he was a son of Eva Rae Meeks Wood Weisgarber of Dover and the late John Wesley Wood. Doug was also preceded in death by his step-father, George Weisgarber; brother, Rex Weisgarber and grandson, TJ Swiger.

Doug served his country as an E-5 Tech Sergeant in the Air Force from 1964 to 1968. Following the military, he worked as a steel worker then a meat cutter, which fostered his interests in barbequing. He established Boot's BBQ & Catering after retiring from the Strasburg Provision.

Doug will be sadly missed by his wife of 37 years, Lucy Yoder Wood, whom he married on May 23, 1975; children, Sonya Wood Swiger of Strasburg, Charles Douglas "Woody" Wood Jr., of Rittman, Charlene (Scott) Wood Chapman of Brewster and Blaze Wesley (Krystle) Wood of New Knoxville, Ohio; grandchildren, Ashley, Marcus, Kaitlyn, Zachary, Christian, Kyle and Jazmine; siblings, Harry (Bonnie) Wood, Pam (Tim) Schram, Buddy Weisgarber all of Strasburg and Diane Wood Dunn of Alabama.

Doug absolutely loved watching his children and grandchildren playing sports, and everyone who knew him learned quickly that he loved God and the Steelers, in that order-----we think. He had the perfect personality to be in the catering business because it placed him in the center of many celebrations where he was "The Dad" whether he knew the family or not. In his spare time, Doug also enjoyed fishing with his family.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 25 at 1:00 pm in the Dover Alliance Church with Pastor Richard Rose officiating. Friends can call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover on Thursday from 5-8 pm. Those wishing to express their fondest memories of Doug may do so by visiting the on line obituaries and flowers link on the funeral homes website.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dover Alliance Church at 228 East 3rd St., Dover, Ohio 44622.
