Charles Douglas "Doug" Farmer, 54, of Dover died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 in University Hospital in Cleveland after a long illness.
Born April 13, 1954 in Greenville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Donald Jack Farmer and Barbara Johnson Farmer, who survives him.
He graduated from Lakeland High School in 1973. He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Gibbs on September 10, 1977.
He was a printer for over 35 years. He worked for Newhouse Printing for many years and recently worked for Bates Printing in Massillon. He became affiliated with Eiler Candy Shop, which is his wife's family business.
He was a man of many interests. He thrived on learning and loved watching the history channel and Jeopardy. He enjoyed reading history books and had a special interest in antiques. Doug was a member of a dart and pool league and spent some of his free time on the golf course.
Doug was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler and Ohio State University fan. He had a huge hat collection. Through the years, he collected over 1000 hats.
Doug's father was the Ranger of the Clendenin Council Boy Scouts and leader of troop 173 in Freeport, Ohio. Doug earned his Eagle Scout rank through his father's supervision. He was also a member of the Dover Eagles and the Tuscarawas Intervalley Truckers Van Club.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his two daughters; Melissa (husband, Robert) Sours of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Christina Farmer of Dover; a grandson, Owen Robert Sours of New Philadelphia; two brothers, Donald Michael (wife, Darlene) Farmer of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Stephen Craig (wife, Sandra) Farmer of Mansfield, Ohio; a brother in-law, John Gibbs of Dover and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father in-law; Howard and Margaret Gibbs, maternal grandparents; Charles and Dorothy Johnson, and paternal grandfather; James Krieger.
A funeral service will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory in Dover on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 2:30 pm with Pastor Harold Milligan officiating. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:30-2:30 on Saturday. In honoring Doug's wishes, cremation will follow. After the funeral service, a reception will be held at the Toland- Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
