Charles E. Wilson, who was often known as "Charlie" or "Chuck," age 93, of Dover, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2015, in Community Hospice House, New Philadelphia, surrounded by his family.
Born May 19, 1922, in Mowrystown, Ohio, he was a son of the late Roy W. and Edna (Poorman) Wilson. Charlie graduated from Mowrystown High School, and entered the service of his country with the United States Army Air Corps 101st Fighter Group 27th Fighter Squadron during the Second World War. Charlie served in North Africa and Europe, and was a decorated veteran. Following his discharge, he attended Miami University at Oxford, earning his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education. While at Miami, he met Sylvia Bacon, a student at the former Western College for Women; the couple fell in love and were married on September 20, 1947. Charlie, Sylvia and their young family moved to Dover in 1959, where Charlie was a principal at South and Park Elementary Schools, as well as Dover Junior High School. He retired in 1978, and, in 1980, came out of retirement to serve as principal at the Eastport Elementary School in the Claymont School District, ultimately retiring in 1988.
Charlie was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia, where he served as Elder, Deacon and Director of Christian Education. He was a life member of the Ohio and National Education Associations, and worked very hard with the Friends of the Homeless and the Tuscarawas County Food Bank. Additionally, Charlie belonged to the 27th Fighter Group Association. He was a great Cincinnati Reds fan and loved to play baseball himself. In his later years, his passion turned to golf, and he played regularly at local clubs.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sylvia; his six children, Charles (Tong-Ching) Wilson of New York, New York, Linda (Roger) Corpman of Mineral City, Jeanette (Joe) Banks of Denver, Colorado, Roy (Brenda) Wilson, also of Denver, Steven (Michelle) Wilson of Chicago, Illinois, and Amy (Chris) Swartz of Dover; his twelve grandchildren; his two great-grandchildren; and his many nieces and nephews.
