Charles Grossenbacher

Charles Grossenbacher, 95, of Dover and formerly of Strasburg, died Sunday, January 26, 2014 in the Park Village Health Care Center.

Born September 23, 1918 in Lowell, Ohio he was a son of the late Charles and Bessie Taylor Grossenbacher. Charles was also preceded in death by his brothers, Okey, Lewis and Ralph Grossenbacher; sisters, Frances Hibbitts, Clara Machamer and Ruth Schilling.

Charles proudly served his country from 1941 to 1945 with the United States Army during WW II, having entered the war at North Africa and ending in Czechoslovakia. He was a life member of the New Philadelphia VFW and belonged to the Community Baptist Church in Dover. He was a handy and talented person who loved fishing, gardening and working on his cars, especially refurbishing classic cars.

A wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather, Charles will be sadly missed by his wife of 72 years, Joy Pongrat Grossenbacher whom he married on July 26, 1941; daughter, Sherry (Mike) Holingbaugh of Tennessee; sons, Max (Michelle) Grossenbacher of Mineral City, Mark Grossenbacher of New Philadelphia and Robert (Lisa) Grossenbacher of Dover; brothers, George Grossenbacher of California and Edgar Grossenbacher of Kansas; sister, Marjorie Taylor of North Canton; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 31 at 10:30 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Andy McClung officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg where military graveside services will be held. Friends can call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5-7 pm.
