Charles J. Fondriest, 96, of Dover, Ohio died Thursday, August 18, 2011 in the Park Village Health Care Center at Dover.
He was born March 4, 1915 in Uhrichsville, Ohio, the son of the late Placid and Adelaide (Fondriest) Fondriest.
Charles owned and operated the General Store in Killbuck from 1947-1977. He returned to Dover where he was an employee of the Tuscarawas County YMCA for seven years.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dover and a life member of the New Philadelphia Council of the Knights of Columbus where he previously served as secretary-treasurer.
While in the Killbuck community, Charles was active in numerous community affairs. He was a member and past secretary of the Killbuck Lions Club, member of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce, Clerk and Treasurer of the Board of Public Affairs for 25 years, Deputy Registrar in Holmes County having been appointed by Gov. James Rhodes and Gov. Frank Lausche. He was former treasurer and clerk of the Killbuck Cemetery Association for over 15 years, served 13 years on the Consolidated School District and was honored as the "grand marshal" during a Killbuck community celebration. He had previously attended the Stafford Business College.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Marion, four sisters, Della Willoughby, Emma Hoopingarner, Sr. Olivia Fondriest CDP, and Catherine Fondriest along with a niece, Carolyn Willoughby and a nephew, Raymond Willoughby.
He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephew Beverly (Ron) Kapolka of Chelsea, Michigan, David (Hazel) Willoughby of Uniontown, Beth Willoughby of The Villages, Florida; great nieces and nephews, Marie Ann (Andrew) Till and Jennifer Hall both of Michigan, Steven (Katy) Kapolka of Mississippi, Paul (Laurie) Willoughby of Wadsworth, Connie (Jeff) Carnes of Louisville, OH, Stacy Calogero and Shelly (Rick) Jackman both of Florida, and Wendy (James) Schissel of Connecticut
A Rite of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2011 beginniing at 10:30am in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover with Fr. Matt Hoover and Deacon Ron Fondriest officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Monday from 5-7pm. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 6:45pm.
