Charles R. "Dick" Eckhardt

Charles Richard (Dick) Eckhardt, Sr., 93 of Tuscarawas, OH passed away early Sunday morning, March 6, 2016 in the Park Village Health Care Center.


Born October 24, 1922 in Tuscarawas, OH . He was a son of the late Clarence "Shorty" and Marie Metzger Eckhardt. Dick was also preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Louise Eckhardt; grandson, Kevin Richard Eckhardt; four sisters and two brothers.


Dick attended Tuscarawas Warwick High School and was involved in various sports. Nicknamed in basketball "Tusky" and in baseball "Pap". He was well known for his two handed set shots in basketball.


He will be sadly missed by the love of his life, Wilma Jean (Hill) Eckhardt whom he married on April 11, 1946 and would have celebrated 70 years of marriage. This union blessed him with five children, Rich (Connie) Eckhardt of Dover, Dixie (Bill) Grimm of Tuscarawas, Ed (Kerry) Eckhardt of Strasburg, John (Jeannie) Eckhardt of Tuscarawas; ten grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Hall, Penny (Michael) Capobianco, Ashley (Kevin) Smith , Megan (Alan) Ray, Conor, Austin, Brynn, Kristen and Logan Eckhardt; eight great grandchildren, Ashton, Alec, Ayden and Gabrielle-Alexis Hall, Anthony and Priya Capobianco, Ava Smith and Jaxan Ray.


Dick retired in 1982 after 43 years service as a conductor with the Pennsylvania, Penn Central and Conrail Railroads. He was a life time farmer on his Dad's 43 acres farmland where he raised and sold strawberries and sweet corn to local residents and area markets.


Dick was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church and choir and was a life time member of the United Transportation Union.


Dick enjoyed fishing, mowing, playing the numbers and singing in the choir and watching his children and grandchildren in various sports and activities.
