Charles R. 'Charlie' Vickers, 81, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday in his home
after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 29, 1923, in Deersville, he was a son of the late John C. and Dessie
C. Kail Vickers. Charlie served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and later
in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired from
Associated Grocers in Dennison as a mechanic with twenty-four years of service.
Charlie was a member of the American Legion and Teamsters' Local 92.
Charlie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed gardening,
especially growing vegetables. He was a good neighbor, who was always willing
to help, be it shoveling snow or whatever needed done. He was especially fond
of his little dog, Cokie.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. Gregory Vickers, whom he married Jan. 31,
1946; four sons, Frank (Stella) Vickers of New Philadelphia, Kenneth (Mary)
Vickers and Terry (Janice) Vickers, both of Uhrichsville, and Robert (Pat
Lorenz) Vickers of Dover; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-nine
great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn 'Tony' (Biz) Vickers of Uhrichsville;
several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Vicki (Anthony) Gardner
of Uhrichsville.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by a son and
daughter-in-law, Richard and Melinda Vickers; a daughter-in-law, Jackie
Vickers; four sisters and four brothers.
A service celebrating Charlie's life will be held Friday, Dec. 17, at 1:30 p.m.,
in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Rev.
Harry H. Milligan officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, New
Philadelphia, where military rites will be observed. Family and friends are
invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday, Dec. 16, 5-8 p.m. To sign the
