Charles Ray "Chink" Herron, 82, of Dover passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Cleveland Clinic following a sudden illness.
Born on March 2, 1933 in Barnhill, he was the son of the late Glenn Oden Herron and Evelyn (McClain) Stress. He was also preceded by two brothers; James "Jimmy" and Gerald "Jerry" Herron, and a sister; Joanne Stephens.
Chink attended New Philadelphia High School. Before graduating, he joined the United States Army where he honorably served our country in both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
He retired from Reeves Steel in 1991. He enjoyed racing cars and was a skilled car mechanic. Chink was a handyman and could fix just about anything. He loved baseball and was inducted into the Cy Young Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed playing cards, golfing, and bowling in many leagues. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.
He attended New Pointe Community Church and was a lifetime member of the Elks, Eagles, New Philadelphia VFW, and the New Philadelphia Moose, where he served as a former Administrator and Governor. He was also a member of the New Philadelphia AMVETS.
On April 18, 1959, he married the love of his life, Shirley Meese, who survives. He will also be sadly missed by four children; Gerald Glen "Bubba" Herron of Dover, Tracy Lynne (Robert) Knierim of Olmsted Falls, Lorie Ann (Derek) Mann of Dover, Kevin Ray (Lindsay) Herron of Strasburg; ten grandchildren, Danielle Herron, Brittany Penso, Kayla Penso, Alex Penso, Autumn Knierim, Tori Mann, Mason Howell, Trevor Knierim, Delanee Herron, and Maloree Herron; one great grandchild, Ayvah Sophath; along with two sister, Carol (Ron) Regula of New Philadelphia, and Rosalie (John) Youngman of Dover.
In honoring Chink's wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. A memorial gathering will take place at the Moose, 490 S Tuscarawas Ave, Dover, Ohio 44622, on Sunday, January 24, 2016 from 3-7pm. At 3:00 pm the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct a final salute.
