Chester A. Bennett, M.D., of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, in his home.
Born Jun. 1, 1904, in Newcomerstown, he was a son of the late Howard and Bessie Gephart Bennett. Dr. Bennett did his undergraduate work in pre-med at Ohio University, and graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in 1932. He married a young nursing student, Ruby Davis, in Covington, KY, in 1933. Dr. Bennett attended the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 for surgical training, and served a surgical residency in Sumter, SC. In 1940, Dr. Bennett set up practice in the bank building in Strasburg, moving his practice to Dover a few years later.
Dr. Bennett retired from his regular practice in 1968, he then accepted a position as physician for the Lynchburg, Virginia Training School, where he served until 1987. Additionally, he was a former county health commissioner. Dr. and Mrs. Bennett lived in Dublin, OH, for a short time, before moving to New Philadelphia in 1990. There he enjoyed vegetable gardening, a life-long hobby.
He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dover; Cypress Lodge No. 604 F. & A.M., Strasburg; the International College of Surgeons; and was a founding member of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons.
Survivors include three sons, Chet (Marcia) Bennett, M.D. of Dublin, David (Donna) Bennett of Bolivar, and John (Carol) Bennett of Elgin, TX; five grandchildren, John David, Lesia, Aaron and Danell Bennett, and Macie Galigher; seven great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Andrew, Loren, Autumn, Keeton and Dominic; a sister, Mary (George) Evans of Cincinnati.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby; a sister and two brothers.
A funeral service will be hels Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., in Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Brian K. Nunnally and Dr. William C. Haggis officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. There will be a reception in the church following the committal. Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, 3-5 and 7-9 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover. Cypress Lodge will conduct Masonic services Thursday at 8:30 p.m., in the funeral home.
