Chester R. "Chet" Schlegel

Chester R. "Chet" Schlegel, age 73, of New Philadelphia, passed away Monday, January 11, 2016, after a battle with cancer.

Born June 1, 1942, at New Bedford, he was a son of the late Frederick R. and Erma (Kaser) Schlegel. Chet attended Baltic High School, and was employed by Wayne Dalton Corporation at Mt. Hope from which he retired.

Chet was a devoted family man whose pastimes included working with wood he crafted many beautiful picture frames, collecting John Deere toy tractors, gardening especially tomatoes, and hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. (Snyder) Schlegel, whom he married on October 2, 1999; his daughters, Pat Stevens, Theresa (Ron) Lower and Melissa Schlegel, all of Dundee; his step-daughters, Lori (Scott) Urfer of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Wendi Iberg of Conway, South Carolina; his nine grandchildren; his nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Edna (Pete) Brenly of New Bedford; his brother, Kenneth (Carol) Schlegel also of New Bedford; and his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Chet was preceded in death by his wife, Carol (Metz) Schlegel; his daughter, Brenda Keffer; and his grandson, Trevor Martin.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Thursday, January 14, 6 8 p.m. Chet's life will be celebrated Friday, January 15, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home; Rev. Erik Cremeans will officiate. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard at Dover.
