Clarence E. Doney, age 95, a long-time resident of Strasburg, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, in Park Village at Dover.
Born Aug. 14, 1921, at New Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Frank "Pont" and Phoebe E. Schneider Doney. Clarence moved with his family at a young age to Strasburg and graduated from Strasburg Franklin High School in 1941. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Second World War and most of his military time was aboard the battleship U.S.S. Maryland in the Pacific Theatre. Following his discharge, he married the former Marian Louise Walters on May 24, 1949. The couple reared three children and shared sixty years of marriage prior to Marian's passing on January 1, 2010. Clarence was employed by the Wheeling & Lake Erie, Nickel Plate, and Norfolk & Western Railways, working as a tester and mechanic for air brakes. He retired after thirty-two years of service.
He was a life member of the American Legion at Strasburg, the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Dover, and the Loyal Order of Moose at Brewster. Always a hard-worker, Clarence enjoyed gardening and keeping up the yard around his home. He loved automobiles and nearly everything about them; he drove until the age of 93 and did much of his own repair work. Clarence also enjoyed pitching horseshoes - winning many trophies, playing pool, and traveling with Marian around the United States. He attended nearly all of his naval reunions up until 2005. Very importantly, he was a devoted caregiver to Marian in her last years.
Survivors include his daughter, Janice (Dave) Jones of Powell; his sons, Glen (Kimberly) Doney of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado, and Dave Doney of Delaware (Ohio); his four grandchildren, Sarah (Chris) Olson, Justin (Darcy) Doney, and Andrew and Amy Jones; his four great-grandchildren, Evan and Ethan Olson, Chantel and Weston Doney; and his several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, and his beloved Marian, Clarence was preceded in death by his sisters, Edna Teter and Ruth Doney (in infancy); and his brother, Victor Doney.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m., in St. John United Church of Christ, Strasburg, with Pastor Jason Rissler of St. John United Church of Christ, Strasburg, officiating. Burial will be in Strasburg's Grandview Union Cemetery where the Dover post of the V.F.W. will perform military rites. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard at Dover. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday, Nov. 14, 6 8 pm.
