Clyde R. Smith, age 77, of Newcomerstown, passed away there Friday, February 19, 2016, in Riverside Manor.
Born March 26, 1938, at Frazeysburg, he was a son of the late Clarence and Erma Tanner Smith. He attended Port Washington High School and went on to serve honorably with the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his discharge, he was employed by the Heller Tool Co. (later Simonds) at Newcomerstown. Additionally, Clyde tended bar at the Newcomerstown Moose Lodge, where he was a member. He also belonged to the Newcomerstown post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Clyde loved nature and the outdoors; he canoed on the Tuscarawas and served as a Boy Scout leader. He was a free spirit, and liked to travel whenever the opportunity arose. Some of his other favorite activities were playing golf, bowling and listening to old-time country music.
Survivors include his daughter and son, Tracy Smith and Tim Smith, both of New Philadelphia; his sisters, Carolyn McCoy of Tuscarawas, and Thelma Herron and Dinah Smith, both of Newcomerstown; his former wife and friend, Pat Smith of Newcomerstown; his nieces and nephews; and his Riverside Manor family.
Besides his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by his sister, Myrtle Dowdle; his brother and sister-in-law, Clay and Mona Jean Smith; and his nephew, Michael Todd Herron.
The family will host a memorial gathering on Sunday, February 28, 2 4 p.m., in the American Legion Hall, 1 W. Canal St., Newcomerstown, during which time the Newcomerstown Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military ceremonies.
