Clyde W. Yackey, 72, a lifelong resident of Strasburg, Ohio died Friday evening, Feb. 4, 2011 in Aultman Hospital in Canton.
Clyde retired in April, 1993 from the shipping department of Empire Detroit Steel Company at Dover where he worked for 31 years.
Born November 13, 1938 in Strasburg, he is the son of the late Clyde and Clara Mae (Ralph) Yackey.
Clyde was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia where he sang in the choir. He was a 1956 graduate of Strasburg Franklin High School. He was a well known area vocalist and was involved in Barbershop, Little Theater, Friends of Music and formerly served as choir director of St. John UCC , Strasburg United Methodist Church, and First Eva. Lutheran Church all in Strasburg. Over the years, Clyde sang at numerous weddings and special events. He formerly served on the Strasburg Franklin School Board for eight years and coached Little League Baseball. In his later years, he enjoyed his grandchildren and traveled to their many activities. He will be especially remembered for his joke telling. He had jokes for every subject imaginable. Many people, over the years, enjoyed his homemade candy.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Theda (Bender) Yackey with whom he would have celebrated 47 years of marriage this Nov. 26; two sons, Jon (wife, Stephanie Sifferlin) Yackey and Doug (wife, Julie Jacobs) Yackey all of Dover; six grandchildren, Joshua, Austin, Zackery, and Alexis Yackey and Drew and Madeline Jones; three sisters, Edna (husband, Gary) Smith of Strasburg, Edyth McCaslin of Dover and Dalene (husband, Bob) Domer of Hilliard and a brother in law, David R. Bender of Washington D.C. along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Yackey and his father in law and mother in law, John and Mary E. Bender.
Cremation will take place with a private graveside service in East Sparta Cemetery.
A celebration of Clyde's life will take place Saturday, Feb. 12. 2011 at 2pm in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia with Pastor Stephen Patrick officiating. Friends may call at the church Saturday from noon until 2pm.
